The liberation of Elephant Pass from the LTTE terrorists was commemorated today. The commemoration took place after the hoisting of the national flag. Our Special Representative Ranjith Jayasundera reporting from the area said the official ceremony to commemorate the liberation of the A9 Highway was held in Elephant Pass today. The troops made a significant dedication to liberating the A9 Highway for free movement of the civilians between the North and the South. The A9 Highway and Elephant Pass are now under the complete control of the troops. Troops of the 58th Division and the 53rd and 55th Divisions met at Elephant Pass yesterday. The commemoration commenced under the patronage of the Wanni Security Forces commanding Officer Major General Jagath Jayasuriya. The hoisting of the national flag took place before the commencement of the ceremony. Security Forces Commander of Jaffna Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe, Commanding Officer of the 58th Division Brig. Shavindra Silva, Commanding Officer of the 55th Division Brig. Prasanna Silva and Commanding Officer of the 53rd Division Brig. Kamal Gunaratne patronised in the commemoration ceremony. The troops succeeded in liberating Pallai on the A9 Highway yesterday. Accordingly, the A9 Highway linking Point Pedro and the Dondra Head is reopened after two decades. The opening is of social, political, cultural and economic importance to all communities.
