The best benchmark is one that uses the same software you'll be using the computer for. For example, if you're mostly concerned about photo retouching, look for benchmarks that use a Photoshop filter, with the same settings on the same picture, on different machines. They simply time how long it takes to run the filter.

I don't think that benchmarking is worthwhile. The reason being that the are insurmountable number variables that come in to play when Benchmarking.

you use different load programs specially created for benchmarking,
futuremark 07 being a good gaming benchmark
